System OverviewLIS Systems
The LIS is central to a successful system: One could create web-based reports separate from the LIS, but that would not be terribly useful. The LIS handles all the workflow, billing, tracking and report writing activity in the department, and it tends to be the report archive. Reports that are divorced from the LIS tend to get lost in the departmental workflow.
You will need access to LIS data: The key LIS issue for web reporting system designers is what data is available and how to get to it.
If there are two or more LIS or LIS like systems involved (like an LIS and an Imaging system) there is an issue of associating the proper case in one system with the proper case in the other.
We will discuss these issues in detail in the sections on Data Externalization and Data Integration (vide infra).
