Indexing of Medical Data with UMLS
National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus
700,000 keywords, including definitions, lexical variants, SNOMED, LOINC, CPT, ICD-9, and other medical notations
The NLM & Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) conducted a Large Scale Vocabulary Test (LSVT enhanced UMLS) to improve UMLS
- portions of SNOMED International not in the 1996 UMLS
- included an all important medical entities dictionaries
- the LOINC (Logical Observations Identifiers, Names, and Codes)
- included an up to date medical procedures listing
- about 300,000 terms were added to this new version of the UMLS
We employed both in a testing our ability to index images in our databases (Demo at URL = http://path.upmc.edu/nlm/ )
