The Center for Biomedical Informatics has a two-fold mission:
- to promote research addressing the use of information technology in health care and health education;
- to promote the direct application of state-of-the-art information technology to our ongoing programs of health care and education.
The Center is founded on the premises that there is widespread interest and expertise in information technology at the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and throughout the metropolitan area; that we all have a lot to learn from each other; and that we all stand to benefit from working together. The Center will serve as a coordinating point for informatics activities and as a catalyst of collaborative efforts. To these ends, the Center will offer seminars, symposia, and courses addressing key topics; monitor and publicize funding opportunities; help organize collaborative efforts to secure funding; offer consultative support to informatics research and development efforts; and support efforts to enhance information access through system integration.
The Center for Biomedical Informatics is also the administrative home of the Pittsburgh IAIMS Program. The Pittsburgh IAIMS (Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems) program will help integrate information systems to support clinical, educational, and research activities throughout the expanding enterprise of the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences and the UPMC Health System. As the enterprise expands, the information and knowledge required to operate the enterprise must expand with it. The design, graduated implementation, and maintenance of an integrated information architecture will both preserve the academic mission and enhance our ability to address it. Such sound application of information technology will allow us to grow, develop, and adapt our programs in anticipation of and in reaction to changing circumstances around us.
The Center for Biomedical Informatics WWW site provides medical informatics course information, a meeting and events calendar, links to lecture notes and slides, information about faculty, staff, and fellows, and information about the Pittsburgh Medical Informatics Training Program. The Pittsburgh IAIMS Program WWW site provides information about the education, research, and clinical domains of the program, the IAIMS Update online newsletter, working group meeting notes, and information about special events, lectures and contacts.
