DISTANCE EDUCATION IN ELECTRON MICROSCOPY
Emory University
Atlanta, Georgia
Karlene Hewan-Lowe, MD
Formal training
programs in electron microscopy (EM) are sparse and limited
in scope. Distance education in EM was developed to fill
this void by presenting a set of interactive course materials
that allow pathologists-in-training to achieve proficiency
in diagnostic electron microscopy.
The course units are organized as core didactic material,
just in time educational material and free form material.
Core didactic material covers specimen processing, the electron
microscope and recognition of diagnostic organelles. Just
in time educational material consists of a quiz set of electron
micrographs that are geared toward review of diagnostic
EM for the pathology boards. The free form material illustrates
the practical aspects of diagnostic electron microscopy,
and this material is presented as an electron microscopist’s
diary.
All
course units are delivered via the World Wide Web. Text
and images are presented in hypertext format and within
an interactive learner environment. Rapid feedback is achieved
with dynamic scripts and conferencing software.
