Purpose/Background: There has been explosive
growth in the worldwide use of the Internet in education
and training as the Internet has become readily available
to teaching professionals as well as to the general public.
The Cytopathology program at Baylor College of Medicine
has grown significantly over the past years to a level where
centralization of training material has became essential.
In particular, we experienced a tremendous need for archiving
our conference materials for easier access to residents
and fellows for their further review and discussion. Also,
the lack of a centralized, globally accessible information
source for the scheduled course offerings along with online
registration materials cost us a great deal of time and
inconvenience. Educating the general public about early
detection of cancer through diagnostic cytopathology and
its advantages was also underutilized. To address these
issues, construction of a well-organized Web site is proposed
in this project.
Design: The Web site was designed using "Microsoft FrontPage 98" software with simple text and illustrations with relatively small graphics. The page dimensions were based on a typical dimension of a web browser on a 14 to 15 inch Mac or Windows 95 screen. A simple design grid with a scan column along the left side of the page providing space for local links was consistently used across all pages. After completion, the site was tested on a client computer running server software and then published on the College’s main campus Unix server running Netscape with a backup module installed. A cytopathology fellow is responsible for updating the conference materials every two weeks and other changes in the general contents as necessary.
