2008 Scientific Sessions Abstracts

Scientific Abstract Submission - Deadline: June 30, 2008

Scientific Sessions

Sunday, October 19, 2008 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Moderated by David J. Foran, PhD

The Scientific Session will consist of a series of 15 - 20 minute talks, each of which is immediately followed by questions, which are posed by the audience. Researchers interested in making presentations as part of these sessions should submit a 350 word abstract. There is particular interest in submissions that focus on four main areas of sub-specialization: pathology informatics, biomedical informatics, and molecular pathology and radiology imaging. Recommended topics include but are not limited to: controlled vocabulary, digital microscopy, telemedicine, computer-assisted decision support, pattern recognition, tissue and gene array analysis, data-mining, education, outcomes research, clinical imaging, optics, imaging storage and management, standardization, automation, image based query, integration and workflow.

Recognition will be based on how the presenter's work furthers the fields of informatics and imaging as well as on the content and clarity of the presentation. The work may be motivated by problems encountered in pathology and/or oncology and reflect research on algorithms, systems, software, databases, or it may describe novel laboratory applications and any new technologies or systems impacting informatics. Presenters may employ PowerPoint, multimedia, and/or Internet-based technologies. Awards will be presented on Tuesday evening at the Awards Dinner.

Authors wishing to participate in the Scientific Session must submit an abstract for inclusion in the published proceedings. Electronic submission is required, and submissions must adhere to formatting guidelines. All accepted abstracts will be published in the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. In order to allow sufficient time for reviewing abstracts and notifying authors of decisions, there will be a firm deadline of June 30, 2008 for all submissions.

APIII 2008 will feature three main areas of concentration:

E-Poster Presentations

E-poster presentations are similar to traditional poster presentations, but are presented directly from the Internet using a PC. E-posters may take several forms, including a PC-driven PowerPoint presentation, a live demonstration of a Web site, or other Web-based media. We will provide all the necessary hardware (Pentium-based PCs), software (Netscape and Microsoft Explorer) and connections to the Internet. Macintosh computers are not available for presentations; however, we are open to all presentation formats. Electronic submission of the abstract is required, and all abstracts must adhere to submission compliance and formatting guidelines.

Presenters are eligible for the following awards:

Advancing the Fields of Pathology, Oncology and Bioinformatics Through Informatics Technologies
(Scientific Session and e-poster)
Recognition will be based on how the presenter's work advances the field of pathology informatics, oncology informatics or bioinformatics, with particular emphasis on the content and clarity of presentation. Presentations should focus on new methodologies for information management, applications development within laboratory settings, research on algorithms, systems software, databases and other innovative technologies impacting informatics. Presenters may employ PowerPoint, multimedia and/ or Internet-based technologies. Judging will be based on content and clarity. Abstracts should explain how this work helps to further the field of informatics.

Best Departmental and Cancer Center Web site(e-poster only)
Recognition will be based on how well the site supports the departmental mission. This may include such diverse goals as patient education, graduate and medical education, service to the research or clinical community, marketing of in-house expertise, support of the departmental infrastructure, etc. Judging will be based on the depth of content, breadth of mission, overall utility and style. Abstracts should describe how the Web site supports the departmental mission.

Award to Submit Full Manuscript on Behalf of APIII
Recognition will be based on abstracts which are considered outstanding in terms of their capacity to advance the field and which demonstrate exceptional innovation and originality will be invited to submit a full manuscript for publication consideration in the journal on Cancer Informatics or Archives in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Abstracts are required for all Scientific Session and E-poster presentations. All accepted abstracts will be published in Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The deadline for all abstract submissions is midnight.
