Breakfast Workshop: Digital Pathology Demystified
From Concept to Cash: How to Make it Happen
Michael J. Becich, MD, PhD, Kenneth J. Bloom, MD, Michael D. Feldman, MD, PhD, and John R. Gilbertson, MD
So, the decision to go digital had been made, now what? Why go digital? Is it for everyone? This 4 day breakfast workshop will take you from concept to implementation. These presentations will assist you in identifying a leader, needs analysis, developing requirements, RFP/RFQ, market research, vendor selection, contract negotiation and revenue cycle management.
This workshop will also discuss digital pathology as a QA/QC tool for the lab, improving patient care by inter-working of Radiology and Pathology data, frozen sections studies using digital pathology, improving TAT using digital pathology, pathology portal and virtual case gallery deployment. We will discuss improving quality of diagnostics using an image reference library, pathology portal and virtual case gallery. Suggest discussion with IT group and logistics of image management and LIS integration
By the end of this workshop, attendees should be able to:
- Describe the benefits of digital pathology
- Discuss the pros & cons
- Become familiar with digital pathology for better patient care, competitive marketing advantage, operational efficiencies, and increased revenue
- Identify a leader (internal champion vs. consultant)
- Discuss all aspects of implementation
- Have a better understanding of revenue cycle management
- Discuss DP as a QA/QC Tool for the Lab
- Discuss digital pathology for extending outreach program, Internet consultation, second opinion over the web, peer review, and virtual tumor board
- Describe improved patient care by inter-working of radiology & pathology data

Practical Whole Slide Imaging Digital Pathology Workshop
Drazen M. Jukic, MD, PhD, Jonhan Ho, MD, Anil Parwani, MD, PhD, Jeffrey Fine, MD, and Jon Duboy
Objective: To provide attendees a hands-on overview of the hardware and software used to acquire and interact with whole slide images.
Automated high-speed, whole slide imaging (WSI) systems are becoming increasingly robust with image quality sufficient for diagnostic purposes. Vendors now offer systems that are ready for use in clinical environments and pathologists are increasingly integrating digital images into their practice of medicine. This interactive workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to try out top-rated WSI systems, side-by-side. A pre-selected set of pathology slides will be imaged using various WSI systems prior to the workshop. During the workshop, trained facilitators will help participants use computers to access the images and gain first-hand experience viewing and managing these digital image sets. Vendor representatives will be available to offer additional assistance and information. Participants are also encouraged to bring their personal slides for imaging. The benefits and limitations of current systems will be discussed and participants will be asked to contribute their feedback regarding experiences with WSI systems and integration of digital pathology into anatomic pathology.

Content Based Image Retrieval in Digital Pathology: Fact or Fiction?
Drazen M. Jukic, MD, PhD, Jonhan Ho, MD, Anil Parwani, MD, and Mahadev Satyanarayanan, PhD
This workshop will discuss application of digital pathology beyond the “digital glass”, namely, the interactive retrieval of images based on the areas of interest identified by pathologist. This will also introduce the possibilities that digital pathology introduces in everyday practice that are not possible with the current workflow.
